Savory Yak – Pétange, Luxembourg

Sometimes the best restaurant discoveries are the ones you weren’t even looking for.

And Savory Yak is definitely one of those.

I came across this Nepalese restaurant in Pétange completely by chance, in the former location of Chez Doudou. They’ve been there for around 16 months, and somehow I had never heard of them. Which, considering how much time I spend hunting for restaurants in the South, is almost embarrassing.

When we decided to give it a try, we were actually on the hunt for a good Indian restaurant. I was half expecting another copy-paste of the places we’ve visited over the past year. Same pickles, same samosas, same story.

Well, I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised.

Behind Savory Yak is a chef originally from Kathmandu, who still runs two restaurants back in Nepal. The cuisine is authentically Nepali, with a lovely fusion twist, generous portions and, most importantly, everything made from scratch, right down to the sauces.

And we obviously went a little overboard with the ordering (nothing new here), but absolutely no regrets.

We started with homemade momos, trying all three versions: chicken, pork and vegetarian. And coming from someone who is definitely more of a meat eater, I have to admit that the vegetarian ones were an absolute banger. Don’t underestimate them.

Then came the prawns, which easily made it into my top three dishes of the entire lunch. Completely off the beaten track compared to the seafood dishes I’ve tried in Nepalese restaurants before. Unexpected, full of flavour and definitely something I’d order again.

For the mains, we shared a thali and homemade lamb sausages. The latter completely stole the show for me: rich, intense flavours, served on garlic naan with roasted vegetables and tomato rice. Exactly the kind of dish that makes me want to come back.

And beyond the food, there’s plenty more to appreciate. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the service genuinely friendly, and the presentation of the dishes shows that attention has been paid to much more than just what’s on the plate.

I also appreciated the variety of the menu. Whether you’re a committed meat eater like me, vegetarian or simply a little picky, there’s plenty to explore beyond the usual restaurant classics.

A little extra worth knowing: Savory Yak offers a daily changing lunch menu with a starter and main for just €12.50. They also have a student discount code applicable across their offerings, which is a lovely initiative.

I rarely use the term “hidden gem”, mostly because it gets thrown around far too easily, but Savory Yak might actually deserve it.

And before you accuse me of being biased towards restaurants in the South, my friend doesn’t even live here. His verdict? He would happily make the drive just to eat here again. And I think that says quite a lot.

Now, the funniest part of this whole discovery?

After randomly finding the restaurant, visiting it and chatting with the owners, I discovered that their child goes to the same crèche as Clara.

Because apparently, even in Luxembourg, you can discover a completely new restaurant and still end up knowing someone through your children. LOL.

So, if you’re looking for something beyond the usual Indian restaurant classics, with homemade food, generous flavours, a genuine Nepalese touch and people who clearly care about what they’re doing, Savory Yak deserves a place on your list.

And if, like me, you’ve been passing through Pétange without knowing it existed, consider this your sign to finally stop by.
