Lately, I’ve been trying to get a little more out of my usual area when choosing where to eat.
It’s very easy to fall into a comfortable bubble and always pick restaurants close to home, especially when life is busy. But Luxembourg is small, and there are plenty of places worth driving a little further for. Räiskär in Strassen was one of those recent discoveries.
Chinese food has always had a very specific place in my routine: rainy evenings, lazy Sundays, hangovers, delivery on the sofa. But at the same time, I really enjoy discovering a more refined side of Chinese cuisine — one based on homemade dishes, good ingredients, careful presentation and flavours that go beyond the classic takeaway experience.
That is exactly what I found at Räiskär.
One of the first things that surprised me was the cocktail menu. It is not something I often see developed properly in Chinese restaurants, so I immediately appreciated the idea. And most importantly, the cocktails were actually very good — a proper way to start the meal rather than just an extra page on the menu.
We then moved on to the food.
We started with pork Xiao Long Bao and Hagao, the traditional Cantonese rice-flour dumplings filled with shrimp. Both were fresh and delicate, with the Xiao Long Bao being one of my favourite dishes of the meal.
For the main course, we tried the wok-fried chicken with black garlic. The chicken thigh is prepared with black garlic fermented for several weeks, giving the dish a deep, slightly sweet and very distinctive umami flavour. This was probably my favourite plate of the lunch: comforting, intense and very well balanced.
We also had the shrimp ramen, followed by mochi for dessert.
Overall, everything we tried was fresh, nicely presented and carefully prepared. The food feels homemade and thoughtful, without trying too hard to be overly complicated.
The restaurant itself has a calm and relaxed atmosphere, which makes it particularly pleasant for lunch. Räiskär also offers a lunchtime buffet, which can be a convenient option during the week, but personally I would recommend going for the à la carte menu if you want to properly discover what the kitchen can do.
If you are looking for a nice Chinese restaurant in Luxembourg with fresh homemade food, good cocktails and a slightly more refined approach to Chinese cuisine, Räiskär in Strassen is definitely an address worth keeping in mind.
