A familiar address with a brand-new look!
With temperatures starting to drop, the season of cosy dinners, hearty dishes and long evenings around the table is officially back. And if there is one place in Luxembourg that seems to have embraced this concept, it is the newly reopened Schuman Chalet, right next to the Grand Théâtre.
We recently visited the Chalet for dinner, curious to discover what had changed following its complete reconstruction for the new season.
And I have to say, our experience was a very pleasant surprise!
A New Chalet for the Colder Months
The first thing you notice is obviously the setting. The Chalet has been completely rebuilt, offering a warm, cosy atmosphere that immediately puts you in the mood for winter.
The menu follows the same philosophy, with a great selection of comfort dishes, perfect for the colder months.
From traditional flammkuchen to beef and cheese fondues, raclette and other winter favourites, there is plenty to choose from, especially if you enjoy sharing dishes around the table.
But if sharing is not your thing, don’t worry. You will also find burgers, steaks and other hearty options.
I have to admit that deciding what to order was not an easy task. And seeing some of the dishes arriving at the neighbouring tables certainly didn’t help!
Starting with the Classics
We decided to order a few things to share, starting with a charcuterie board and the classic flammkuchen.
But first, a little detail I almost forgot to mention: we were welcomed with a complimentary pretzel at the table. A nice touch that immediately fits the Chalet atmosphere.
Now, back to our starters.
Special praise goes to our wonderful waiter, who recommended choosing the classic flammkuchen.
And I am not exaggerating when I say this was probably the best flammkuchen I have ever had, including those I have tried abroad.
Sometimes, the simplest dishes are the ones that impress me the most, and this was definitely one of those cases.
The charcuterie board was also a nice way to start the evening, especially if, like us, you enjoy ordering several dishes and sharing them.
One thing worth mentioning is that the starters are quite generous, so keep this in mind when planning the rest of your dinner.
Beef Fondue: No Need to Convince the Whole Table!
Choosing our main course required some negotiations.
Between the dishes on the menu and those we could see being served around us, there were quite a few tempting options.
Eventually, we settled on the beef fondue.
And here is something I particularly appreciated about Schuman Chalet.
Unlike in many other restaurants, fondues can be ordered in individual portions.
Which means you don’t need to convince the entire table to eat the same thing. Very practical, especially when everyone has a different idea of what they want for dinner!
We ordered one portion of beef fondue, containing 250g of meat, with some extra meat on the side.
Considering how generous our starters had been, and the fact that I wanted to save some room for dessert, this was the right choice for us.
However, if you are skipping starters or ordering something lighter, I would recommend going for one portion per person.
The beef fondue is served with four sauces, a side salad and a choice of fries or potatoes.
Once again, our waiter suggested going for the fries.
And once again, he was absolutely right!
We really enjoyed the fondue, but I already know that I will be back to try the cheese fondue or the raclette. There are simply too many interesting things on the menu to stop after one visit.
And Then Came Dessert…
Despite being quite full, there was no way I was leaving without trying something sweet.
We decided to share the French toast with vanilla ice cream.
And what a good decision that was!
This was definitely one of the dishes I would order again. The French toast was absolutely delicious, and the combination with vanilla ice cream made it a perfect ending to our dinner.
We had ordered just one portion to share, as we were already quite full.
But when we finished it, my friend announced that he wanted another one.
I think that says it all!
The Atmosphere: From Family Dinner to a Night Out
Another thing I appreciated about Schuman Chalet is how the atmosphere changes throughout the evening.
At the moment, the restaurant is open only for dinner.
During the earlier hours, the Chalet has a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere, making it a nice option for families or for those who simply want to enjoy a quiet dinner.
Later in the evening, the crowd becomes younger and the atmosphere livelier, making it equally suitable for a romantic date or a night out with friends.
The Chalet also organises special events, so it is worth following their social media pages to see what is coming up.
And one little personal tip before you visit: it gets quite warm inside the Chalet, so dress accordingly!
You can thank me later.
My Final Thoughts on Schuman Chalet
Overall, my experience at Schuman Chalet was great, and I will definitely be back.
The food was very enjoyable, the atmosphere was exactly what you would expect from a winter Chalet, and the service deserves a special mention.
I particularly appreciated our waiter’s recommendations, which turned out to be spot on throughout the evening, from the flammkuchen to the fries.
The classic flammkuchen was probably my biggest surprise of the evening, while the French toast is definitely something I would not skip on my next visit.
And, of course, I still have the cheese fondue and the raclette on my list.
Would I recommend Schuman Chalet? Absolutely, especially if you are looking for a cosy place in Luxembourg City to enjoy some good comfort food during the colder months.
Whether you are planning a dinner with friends, a family evening or a winter date, it is an address worth keeping in mind.
And now I am curious: are you team beef fondue, cheese fondue or raclette?
