Barefoot in Luxembourg meets People: Henrietta

Starting today, Barefoot in Luxembourg will launch a new weekly column that will be dedicated to people living in Luxembourg. It will be a chance to introduce new projects and, as I know I can be pretty boring with always my usual places 🙂 , others’ new favorite spots. We are starting with Henrietta.henrietta2

What is your name?
Henrietta Orosz

How do your friends call you?
Heni

Describe yourself with three words.
Perfectionist, hard-working, crazy 🙂

How long have you been living in Luxembourg?
Since 3,5 years.

What are you doing here?
I am a makeup- and lash artist (and a future economist).

How do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Hmm…Either a well-known makeup artist who can live her dreams, either a successful economist working for one of the EU institutions 🙂

What do you fancy doing in your spare time?
I love walking in the nature. It clears my mind and refreshes me. Luxembourg has beautiful landscape and forests. I love them!

What is your beloved place in Luxembourg?
I love the forests, and the parks under the city & the Grund area. And of course Dunkin’Donuts 🙂

What is your favorite restaurant in Luxembourg?
Cavalli Room; Le fin Gourmand. Both are charming places with outstanding meals & service.

What is your preferred night-life spot in Luxembourg?
Dipso, the wine republic. Excellent wines, snacks and service.

Do you have a favorite drink?
Evian 🙂  and Hugo..

Where do you do your shopping usually?
For food in Delhaize, for clothes in Budapest 🙂

What do you like about Luxembourg life?
Calmer than a big city, less stress and more social life. Your business is known here very fast as the country is small.

What would you improve?
The bus drivers! They can cause you inconvenience with their “own schedule”, not respecting the timetable, sometimes they “forget” to stop, and sometimes they are driving like crazy.. I think I am not the only one with this problem 🙂

What is the best place you visited in a range of 200 km from the city and that you would suggest for a daily trip?
Disneyland Paris 😛 I am joking. Bit more than 200 km but great weekend getaways: DĂŒsseldorf, Oostende or Paris.

What is the best adjective to describe Luxembourg?
Diverse

La Cantine @ Hotel Le Chatelet, a delightful, romantic dinner date

I had already a chance some times ago to eat at the Cantine of Chatelet Hotel, on a quiet side of Hollerich/Gare area, but I did not write a review as having been there only for lunch, I supposed it was not extremely indicative. I had some lovely fish and chip on that occasion and the service – even if, as said, was just a business lunch – was great.

I came back with hubby this week for our weekly date. We called for booking a short while before and we were proposed a table on the terrace.

The restaurant has in fact an open space on the street – for drinks -, a main dining room, a bar lounge and a backyard covered terrace, that is very pleasant during summer time.

I had a ham/melon starter and hubby a beef carpaccio, while for main we shared a “cote de boeuf“,  that was served with vegetables and fries.

Our dinner was just perfect – except for this Spanish guy calling all his f*ck*ng family on Facetime at pretty loud volume just next to our table for hours – nothing could have been better.

We had a great St.Emilion Gran Cru that was always served by the waiters, the starters were delicate and tasty, and the meat was indeed delicious – maybe next time I will go for the Chateubriand, instead, as this cut was just a bit too nervous, but only for my taste, hubby loved it.

The final coffee was accompanied by a yummy almond cake and, with the bill, we were offered two digestives – oh mon dieu, how much time had passed since a restaurant offered me some final drink? Well done and highly appreciated!

I have also to say that, together with the ambience and the food, one of the best thing of this place is the service. Talking with hubby I said: for me, tonight, this is exactly what I consider the real perfect service. Waiters were smiling, kind, affable, always there when you needed them but not bothering rest of the time.

I will definitely visit La Cantine more often and I highly recommend it for a couple or friends date. If you fancy good food and refined atmosphere, you would love this place!

Mansfeld Reloaded: Business Dinner with the Boss

I talked about the re-opening of Mansfeld Brasserie some posts ago. I said it used to be one of my favorite place in town and the first visits confirmed the old glory. I tested it once again while my bosses were in town and I was not disappointed.

We had a fabulous time and my guests were extremely glad about the choice.

Definitely and once again highly recommended if you want to have a posh delicious dinner, without the heart attack upon bill receipt. Ca va sans dire, this is not gonna be cheap, but you will have, beyond any doubt, the clear impression to have spent the fairest price for the merriest evening.

Super thumbs-up: friendly and smiling service, some kind of rare gem among all grumpy waiters at most gastro places in Luxembourg.
Secret hints: great choice of gins for a strong start or a relaxing after dinner; lovely terrace overlooking the river; my favorite dish is the tuna tataki – just heaven! and.. make same place and don’t skip the dessert, they are all worth it!

Afterwork Glam at Pop Up Store Opel Adam with Janette Magazine

For the launch of the new Opel Adam – a really fancy city car available in several personalized versions -, Autopolis has opened a pop up store and arranged a week of special afterwork events, one night for every model of the Opel Adam, in collaboration with Janette Magazine and Luxuriant Magazine.

I attended with Anna the Glam Afterwork (what else could you have imagined for us?) and we took advantages of the several “glam stations” organized for the night in connection with the Opel Adam version Glam: among the delicious buffet and some drinks, there were olfactory discover atelier, make up bar, nail bar, coaching…

In particular, we experienced the chignon bar organized by Giovanna Coiffure and we couldn’t be happier about the results. My short hair were transformed in just ten minutes in something amazing! A special thanks to all these passionate girls that were working like mad with hairdryers and straighteners with yesterday temperatures!

We also discovered this new online shop (“Passe-moi l’sel Cherie“) that, above all, sells some amazing bags – one with pink flamingo captured our attention – directly from London. Check out their website.

The event was definitely super funny and you are still on time to check out the new Opel Adam and to attend next afterworks that will be held this week and next one at the Pop Up Store in Boulevard Joseph II – five minutes walking from Hamilius. Find a comprehensive list here.

Once again, Janette is organizing the best girly events in Luxembourg 🙂

Indian Dinner at Taj Mahal, Luxembourg

Before getting engaged, I was eating Indian food almost once per week. I really like spicy food and Vindaloo chicken was my favorite comfort food, my hangover remedy and my usual takeaway order. Unfortunately hubby is not so much into exotic food, so since we moved together I am allowed to have Indian food only on special occasions 🙂

Among all the Indian restaurants I’ve tried in Luxembourg, my favorite one is the Taj Mahal, in rue de Strasbourg, Station. The area is not extremely fancy, but when you have such great food this is not extremely important.

On last Friday night we visited it, we had some meat samosa, lentil soup, plain and spicy papadom. Chicken as main – I had a spicy one from Agra region, while hubby stayed safe with a butter and tomato one – and garlic naan. We drunk Indian beer as usual.

Things I love about this restaurant:

– They are extremely kind. Even if we are not coming here so often, they are always treating you as a special client.

– Food is great and portion are fair. Ingredients are fresh and mostly home made.

– They are always happy to make you take away the remaining food.

Things I love a bit less:

– DĂ©cors are a bit dated, but this is not a real issue if you are not looking for a posh dinner date.

Taj Mahal, 2 rue du Strasbourg, Luxembourg Ville.

Easter Week end At Le Clervaux, Boutique & Design Hotel, Clervaux, Luxembourg

Finally this year we decided to leave Luxembourg for Easter break.

Considering the bad weather forecast and the fact we did not want to spend all day travelling, we booked at Le Clervaux, a hotel boutique located in Clervaux, in the north of Luxembourg.

We took our train on Sunday morning – actually bus plus train, as there were some works on the road – and we got to Clervaux in around one hour and a half.

The village is lovely and the hotel is about ten minutes walking from the station.

Things we loved about our stay

– Our suite was huge. TV in the bathroom, shower and bath, king size bed, Nespresso machine, minibar, amazing wardrobe. Nothing was really missing, it was the perfect room.
– The breakfast the morning after was also outstanding – we had even champagne.
– We booked our stay because of the wellness center in the hotel and we had mostly great time. The “sauna world” has sauna, salt grotto, steam bath, relaxation area and much more. Clean and relaxing. We had also a “couple massage” for 30 minutes that was super.
– The hotel has two restaurants – a gastronomic Italian one (Da Lonati) and a steakhouse/pizzeria (Rhino). We tried the steakhouse, had some shared charcuterie as starter and cote a l’os and steak for main (#foodporn pictures are following the post). Delicious. I would not exclude to visit it again even if a bit far from the city, as it was one of the best meat I had in my life – to remind: yummy truffle mayonnaise and extremely kind service.
– There was also an elegant bar – Cabana Lounge -, that was very animated, where we get drunk after dinner – to remove all the wellness hours’ benefits 😛

The only thing we did not like very much:

– The pool area was shared with the next door hotel and was full of kids. I honestly prefer hotels without kids but I am pretty sympathetic if they are well-behaving. In this case, they were just diving in the pool, making a lot of noises and using the Jacuzzi for their games. I would say this was not the situation for kids. If you book a boutique hotel with only suites, you won’t expect to share common area with another hotel for families. We ended up not using the pool as it was really messy.

On Monday morning there was a market just next to the Castle and we spent some hours around – notwithstanding the cold.

In conclusion, it was a lovely break and if you would like to have some relax without travelling too much, it is definitely recommended – maybe off-peak season in order to avoid confusion.

There is a new bar in town: Octans – a Spirited Bar

Walking in the city center on Monday night, I noted this new place in rue de Cure’, just next to Urban bar. Back home, I did a small search online and I was not able to find any significant information. That made me so curious that, arranging a girl night for Wednesday, I immediately proposed to go there!

The bar, as said, is located right next to the “cool” area of Luxembourg city center. It is very dark from the outside, but, immediately in, you are welcome in a different world. I was saying to my friend: somehow I had the impression that walking through the door I left Luxembourg and I am just drinking something in Mayfair.

The atmosphere is sophisticated: mirror, fireplaces, a charming round bar. Waiters in an elegant uniform accompanied people to the tables. Tall tables on the side of the bar, low tables in the main area.

We were welcomed by the bar manager, who introduced herself and the concept behind the bar. She explained that they want to be a real cocktail bar, they have a menu, but they will try to “play” with the customer if possible and create personalized flavors cocktails based on his/her preferences. We have been asked questions about what we would have liked to drink (spicy, sour, fruity, sweet), kind of alcohol we liked, and we received the first two amazing cocktails. I had a fruity one with tequila, Federica a spicy gin with cucumber. We continued with the same style during the night. Cocktails were all delicious – probably but the last one that had too much anise, I also had too many glasses – and you could also have wine, beers, champagne.. It was a nice environment, chatty but not noisy, bit of music, people arriving and leaving.

We had great time and I am pretty sure this is going to become my favorite night spot in Luxembourg 🙂 Finally a new place and above all a different one. Well done. I just hope that the approach with the client will remain the same in the future.

Guest’s Post: Federica & the 8th Aperinetwork Event

8th Aperinetwork event, that was already reviewed earlier this year by Barefoot in Luxembourg, took place again at White House by Kader. I could not attend this time, so here Federica is telling us something more about that night.

The event is becoming now a monthly reunion for young professionals who want to enjoy the Italian way to do aperitivo in an international ambience.
White House staff was, as always, professional and cool and guests of the night could enjoy a huge free buffet and a captivating dj-set.
One decisive moment of the night was the prize-giving, who awarded three random participants with 3 Bernard Massard  bottles of Cremant (0.75l, a magnum and 3L). To win them you only have to join the event on Facebook, attend that night and then winners are extracted randomly from participants list.
Check Aperinetwork page for further locations and events.

The last supper: L’Osteria, Luxembourg City

I have decided to give a try to Kayla’s famous diet before my birthday, so I will avoid dining out at least for a week – and then I will see depending on the results. To find the motivation to start and to have a last dinner with my husband after London week end, we headed to the City Center, where we had a lovely dinner at L’Osteria, on Place Guillaume.

I always liked the food at this restaurant – fresh products and genuine Italian dishes. Moreover, since last time we visited, the service improved a lot – we have been there during summer and one waitress, who luckily is not working there anymore, was hitting on my husband! The waiters this time were super kind, the atmosphere was relaxed and we had great time.

I had octopus salad as starter and spaghetti con vongole as main. Portions are huge, but I put my best efforts to finish the dish.

I really recommend this place if you want to have a quiet date and great Italian food. I would definitely say go for the fish on the menu.

Ech sinn Ă«rem – I am back

I see. It has been a bit less than one year since I deactivated my Barefoot in Luxembourg. I was feeling kind of demotivated after years of having hundreds of followers on my Splinder blog. I started to be a blogger when Chiara Ferragni was yet to get her third grade and my blog was a kind of extremely personal stream of consciousness totally separate from my day-to-day life. Most of my friends barely knew I had a blog and there, there, yes, I could have been the kind of person I was not in my real life, myself. Splinder closed and at the same time my life went off a new dimension. Happier, for sure, but in some ways less interesting. This, probably, was one of the reasons because I was feeling frustrated: I did not have enough things to tell my people about.

Then I realized. Things changed, outside. I am married, well behaving most of the time, out of the range of extremely creative ways to evolve my current job. But. I am still travelling, physically and with my mind. I am still going crazy for childish things, still addicted to reality shows and still with a 2.55 in my bucket list before buying an house. What more?

I attended My Little Fashion Diary blog class yesterday, at House 17, here in Luxembourg. It had on me the same effect of the juniors’ introduction at university. I will never be a fashion blogger, this is for sure – I still miss an Antigona, a Reflex and a MacBook on my knees -, but isn’t my Moleskine more fashion, gosh?

This is gonna be, once again, a semi serious chronicle of my Luxembourg crazy life – whatever it means.
