Mamacita, Luxembourg city: good Friday night spot

I visited Mamacita in Luxembourg city as soon as it opened its doors, some years ago. I clearly remember I was not impressed: cocktails were less than average and pricey and food was nothing special. The service, on my first visit, has been really bad and I left particularly annoyed by the waiters’ attitude – they totally ignored us in favor of a kind of “VIP” table next. After this negative experience, I came back there only for some drinks during summer.

But as said several times, I tend to give all the places a second chance after some times, so last week I decided to come back to Mamacita for a Friday night dinner with a colleague who was visiting.

I booked throught their Facebook page – replies were fast and very kind. One improvement point already!

We got there at 8 pm after couple of warm-up drinks next door at White House – good combo on Friday night, even if White House is basically empty at that time, you have the best service and the best tables for you.

We were accompanied to the floor and we got to choose our table between two which were still empty. The room quickly became very busy, with couple of groups celebrating birthday parties.

We started with some frozen margaritas and chilli beers, which we accompanied with a mixed platter of starters for two to share – we were four – and some tequila shots – we were in good mood ūüôā

After that, we went for single dishes РI had spicy shrimps while hubby had chilli con carne, similarly my colleague opted for chilli and his wife for a ceviche Рand a bottle of Nebbiolo from California. We concluded with some more shots.

Here you have some pictures of our dinner. After that, my impressions about this second try at Mamacita.

 Thins I loved about Mamacita:

  • ¬†We had great service, indeed. We felt never forgotten by the waiters, notwithstanding the busy evening, and all of them were kind, smiling and in good mood. They granted us a very funny night, thanks.
  • Food was good – not amazing,¬†but still very¬†good. The mixed starter platter was enough to share for 4 people, in particular the quesadillas were very tasty. My main was nice: well presented and fair quantity. I have seen amazing burgers passing in front of me for other tables.
  • Drink selections – my colleague noted it – was very good: between tequilas, beers, wine and cocktails for sure you won’t leave thirsty.
  • The atmosphere is¬†warm and you feel very welcome. Everything is pretty fine priced (we spent 237 Euros in total for 4 persons – 3 cocktails, 3 beers, mixed starter, bottle of wine for 47 euro, 2 platters of shots, 4 main courses).

Things I liked a bit less about Mamacita:

  • I confirm my first time impression on cocktails, unfortunately: frozen margarita was not good at all (lots of ice and syrup) – but as said, you have other things in the list of the drinks you can enjoy more.
  • At a certain point, the room was very very noisy. This might not be definitely a bad point for some, but I would not suggest it for a romantic date or if you want to chat with your mates.

I recommend Mamacita: For amazing and very kind service, nice food at a fair price and great atmosphere. Perfect for a night out in town, parties and celebrations, even for small groups. I will definitely come back soon – during the week – to try the burgers!

Fashion Days Luxembourg – Day II

I have already talked about how glad I was to be part of Fashion Days Luxembourg event here. As said, Friday night was dedicated to the consolidated designers, while the Saturday event started with fashion shows of stylists with less than three years of experience who were participating to the Startup Designer Awards.
The collections were really different one from the other and the all evening had a more professional allure compared to the night before – even if the first part was a bit too long, without any break.
My favorite designers were Enora Hiernaux, who resulted to be the winner of the Startup Designer Awards and Bastien Sebillot, who, with his combination between mesh and leather was one of the most supported by the public.

During the second part of the evening, before the winner was elected, the consolidated stylists who have seen also the day before, have a further catwalk.

Check out some more pictures of the Saturday show by Kochi Wz and check out Fashion Days Luxembourg FB page to be updated on the next edition.

A week end in Milan – random pictures

A week end of friends, museums, Libertines concert, and some shopping, definitely.

You can flight to Milan from Luxembourg Findel airport directly. With Easyjet, with some advance, you can manage to get favorable prices even for Friday – Monday flights.

Easyjet flight is landing at Malpensa Airport Terminal 2. From there, you can take a free shuttle to Terminal 1 (10 minutes) and from there getting a train directly to Milan Central Station or Cadorna Station. The ride is taking 40 minutes and costs around 10 euros.

From Terminal 2, you can also take a direct bus for a cheaper price, but the motorway could get pretty busy during pick hours, so you should take in consideration a longer journey.

Just couple of address to recommend in Milan:

Maison Borella hotel, Navigli area. Intimate and Luxury. Outstanding service.
Zen Restaurant, Corso Italia area. Great sushi. Service a bit messy. Really fair price (Sushi Boat below around 15 euro per person)
Mercato Metropolitano, Porta Genova area. It a an open-air market where you have ton of street food trucks . From fish and chips to oysters, from Sicilian food to wine stand, from cocktail area to Burgers. You have only to choose!

London Week End

I am back! I needed some time to recover from the week-end adventures and all the emotions (& bubbles) we had.

Weather in London was pretty better than Luxembourg – sunnies on, what a change! – but quite windy.

We stayed at Queen’s Gate Hotel, 10 minutes walking from South Kensington tube and in front of bus number 70 – if you are the lazy one like we are. The hotel was lovely and our room, compared to London standards, was huge. I couldn’t say the same about the wardrobe and the bathroom, but at the end we were definitely happy about the choice and I would likely come back here for next trips. Breakfast was also relatively nice.

On Friday lunch time, we visited this fabulous cheese shop close to our hotel, La Cave a Fromage, where we could still feel a bit in Luxembourg Рall waiters were French speakers. I took a salad with Pata Negra ham & manchego cheese, my sister one with Roquefort and apples and Anna a delicious platter of cheese and charcuterie. A glass of wine each and some yummy home-made bread. We spent 20 pounds each and we were definitely satisfied. In the shop you can have lunch, a glass of wine, a sandwich, or even just buy some cheese or charcuterie to take away. If you love cheese, you cannot miss it Рjust next South Kensington tube entrance.

During the day we had a stroll in Chelsea, visited Saatchi Gallery and some shops in Sloane Street area.

On Friday night we had a date with a friend living in London. We had a quick drink at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, that is my favorite pre-dinner spot, and then we headed to Kurobuta @ Marble Arch. The restaurant concept is about Japanese tapas: the food was amazing. I had some sashimi pizza with truffles oil, spicy tuna maki and salmon mayo rolls. Also other dishes at the table were looking great. We had some drinks to start Рthe spicy sake melon I had for sure one of the best I tried in my life Рand a fairly reasonable Italian wine to dine. Unfortunately, if on one side the food experience was heavenly, the ambience was not in line: service was a bit messy Рdefinitely not worth for a date, as you are receiving all food and beverage at different timings and spending the night served by six or seven different waiters Рand above all the music Рwow, the music was way too loud. I had to scream to speak with the person in front of me and I was not even able to listen to others. We cut the dinner at coffee time, instead of having some sake or after dinner drinks, because we were all about to get a headache.. So recommended if you are in your 20s and want to get drunk in a rock concert environment, not suggested if you want a dinner date with friends and you actually care about what the others are saying Рa pity, anyway, as the food was some of the best Japanese food I have ever had.

Saturday was our busiest day Рbridal fittings, Harrods and some afternoon Champagne. In the evening, we had our booking at Bob Bob Ricard as we definitely had to celebrate our Vera Wang gowns!

The restaurant is in the heart of Soho and it is extremely luxury, sophisticated, a bit posh. We were accompanied to the downstairs¬†bar – as our table was not yet ready¬†– and we started drinking some Champagne Rose. We were proposed then a table in the bar area – but after the previous day experience, this was the last thing we wanted to have, above all as I booked the table three months in advance specifying it was for a special occasion. So after a while (fighting – lol), we were offered a private room table and from there on everything was perfect. We had some oysters to share, single starters – I had a sea bass ceviche, perfect – and a huge main portion – Lobster burger for me with mashed truffle potatoes. We drank a perfect temperature Chablis and everything was really really¬†amazing. I read a lot of online review before booking at Bob Bob Ricard, and in some of them emerged that the food was pretty “common”, portions not in line with the price, service rude. We did not experienced anything of that. For sure, next time I will specify I want to have a table at the restaurant – but except for that, the service was amazing, same than the food, we were all full when we left and I felt my money were definitely well spent. Strongly recommended if you are looking for a special place for a date or for a celebration – maybe next year for wedding anniversary, why not ūüôā

We took our way home on Sunday pretty tired, after a bit of see-sighting. I definitely cannot wait to be in London again – and to wear my Vera Wang gown in two months ūüôā
