What to do – Restaurants open on Sunday evening in Luxembourg

Since my husband started to work during week-ends, it is really common we want to have a date on Sunday evening. Unfortunately it seems that there is a sort of curfew in Luxembourg on that night and only few places are accessible.
This is the reason because I decided to do a short list of places, open on Sundays, I tried and I might recommend – at least you don’t have to call half of the Editus “restaurant” chapter to check them in advance like I usually do  🙂

Budget-Friendly

Mr. Wok
Mr. Wok, Hollerich area, is the perfect place on a budget for big appetite on Sunday evening. They have a huge main room – no needs to reserve, definitely – and infinite choices of food on the all-you-can-eat buffet. Starting from Chinese starters to main courses (noodles, fried chicken, Cantonese rice) to fresh sushi to conclude with cakes and ice-cream. The best part, anyway, is the wok/grill area, where you can choose your raw ingredients and ask the chef to prepare them in front of you. Everything for 24.9 Euro (drinks not included)
Perfect for: hangover recovery

Bosso
Bosso restaurant, Grund area, has lovely settings, decent service and various menu choices – including vegetarian – mainly from Alsatian kitchen. Flammekuchen are extremely tasty and main course portions are pretty big. With starters between 4 and 10 Euro, flammekuchen for around 10 Euro and meat mains around 15 Euro, you can definitely have a nice and pleasant dinner without going bankrupt. Reservation recommended.
Perfect for: eating on terrace during summertime.

Pizza Places

Bella Napoli
Bella Napoli is located in the main Station area and it is quite an institution. They have delicious tiny-crust pizza with Italian garnitures, the service is pretty fast and the location is always packed – and a bit noisy.
Perfect for: a quick dinner with not many formalities.

Mama loves you
Mama loves you is a trendy pizzeria – with also great alternative like burgers – down rue de Hollerich. The settings are very modern and cared in details – even if the gap between tables might be a bit small.
I love this place because has very tasty pizzas with unusual – but not too much – garnitures. My favorite one is with nduja spicy Italian sausage and bufala.
Perfect for: taking out for dinner someone you just met over the week end.

Matese
Matese is a typical neighborhood place in Bonnevoie and, despite its old fashion location, is always packed over week-ends. They offer an informal but kind service and a huge choice of dishes from yummy carpaccio to amazing pizza – one of my favorite in town.
Perfect for: a family gathering or if you live in Bonnevoie

La Torre
La Torre is located in Limpesberg and has a typical Italian atmosphere. Pizza is thick and prepared with fresh ingredients from Italy. Sundays are always busy, so you better call in advance to secure you place.
Perfect for: a dinner with friends

Romantic

Beim Siggy
With the best view in town, Beim Siggy, in Clausen, is definitely more than a simple brasserie. Courses have a wonderful presentation and delicious taste and the wine list is nice and with fair recharges. Lovely service and affordable bill are the ingredients to complete your night.
Perfect for: a date with someone you want to impress

Brasserie Herve
If you are not afraid of going out of the “city center” comfort zone, Brasserie Herve is the perfect place to enjoy a romantic date. The interior design resembles cosmopolitan and posh locations, the menu is limited but full of fresh ingredients and different choices – including vegetarian -, prices are reasonable and service amiable.
Perfect for: if you are bored of going always to the same places

Exotic

Tibet
It must be said that most of the Indian restaurants in town are working on Sundays. Tibet restaurant, located near Zitha Clinik in the Station area, is one of my favorite, because it offering not only traditional Indian dishes, but, as the name suggested, also Tibetan ones. The location is colorful and the service always kind and smiling.
Perfect for: concluding with a pinch of happiness your week end

Le Grec
This lovely and noisy Greek restaurant in Bonnevoie welcomes you with informal service, big and tasty dishes and authentic ingredients. The only problem might be that you would like the day after to be still Sunday.
Perfect for: having fun with friends.

Splurge

Sapori
Located in Beggen, Sapori restaurant proposes a traditional refined Italian cuisine prepared with seasonal ingredients. The location is elegant but minimal. The service is proactive and dishes are great – above all those with meat. The wine list is one of the best I have seen in town. Ca va sans dire, the bill is adding up quite fast, but it is definitely worth it.
Perfect for: a special celebration that deserves a great bottle

Ikki
Even if Clausen is a bit silent on Sundays, Ikki is not closing its door. You can start with a drink at the ground floor and move to the trendy restaurant. The menu proposes both traditional international dishes and a great sushi choice. Service is appropriate and if you are not yet tired, you can move back downstairs for the last dance of the week.
Perfect for: feeling part of the jet-set also on Sunday evening.

Brasserie Herve, Luxembourg – a pleasant discovery!

In my last posts of the series “What to do” regarding the Station and Bonnevoie area, I was complaining the lack of a refined and fashion place to dine.
After learning about its change of management, I decided to head with Patricia to Brasserie Herve for a relaxed lunch. Brasserie Herve is, unluckily, located in a not very fashionable area, just few steps from Luxembourg Main Station.
Indeed, since its opening, I was attracted by the décor and the intimacy of the location. Unfortunately, previous management seems not to be able to use the potential of the place.
On Tuesday, we had indeed an amazing lunch.
We were welcome by a very kind and professional waiter speaking both English and French perfectly and we received a great amuse-bouche prepared with truffle cream and dried tomatoes. This was just an initial indicator that our experience was going to be exceptional.
The restaurant, for lunch, has a menu du jour selection (choice among 3 dishes) for 12.5 euro, plus chef suggestions between 9 and 16.5 euro plus “a la carte” menu.
We were advised by the waiter to go for the “Italian burger”, prepared with sautéed peppers , pesto and beef meat. He was also available to explain in details other dishes on the list we were interested to – but at the end we follow his experience.
We accompanied the lunch with two glasses of wine – again, the waiter made us try the wine, even if it was just the “home selection”, to be sure we were fine with it, before serving. These are the small little things most of the places are not taking care about and that, for me, are doing a big difference.

After the pictures of our lunch, you will find as usual my impressions about this restaurant.

Things I loved about Brasserie Herve:

  • Unbeatable ambience: around the station you cannot find such elegant and fashion place. Once you enter the front door, you can forget where you are, like you directly transported in a Manhattan fancy bar.
  • Great food: everything we had on our table was exceptional. From the truffle amuse-bouche to the burgers to the apple pie served as dessert with the menu. You can definitely understand the quality of the materials is really important at Brasserie Herve, and I especially loved the truly amazing meat taste.
  • Quality/Price and Choices on the Menu: 12.5 euro for a Brasserie Herve menu du jour that includes an amuse-bouche and on Monday/Tuesday also a dessert is a very good deal for Luxembourg city and above all for this kind of restaurant. Just some weeks ago, I paid 18 euro for a pasta dish around the corner… and here you have meat, fish, veggie choices for all the tastes and for all the prices – so not only on budget, but also recommended If you want to spoil yourself.
  • Authentic customer service: through my interviews of “Barefoot in Luxembourg meets people“, I realized that what most expats complain about in Luxembourg is the level of the service. At Brasserie Herve, it was clear they really care. We never had to ask, we were always served before and never bothered by the waiters. From bread, to water, to mayonnaise, everything was taken to the table on time.

Things I liked a bit less:

  • You might not be attracted by the surroundings, but this is definitely not restaurant’s fault. Indeed, I find refreshing to have a fashionable place to visit also in the station area, without the needs to find yourself each and every time walking past the same places in the city center. We had great time at Brasserie Herve – our lunch was delicious, the atmosphere is very modern and fashionable and the service was outstanding.

This is the perfect place for a lunch with your girlfriends before some shopping, for a relaxed happy hour with your colleagues during the week or a fancy business dinner after a day of meetings. We will definitely come back.

Barefoot in Luxembourg meets People: Vittorio

For the series “Barefoot in Luxembourg meets People”, this week we meet Vittorio, an Italian expat working at the EU, with music in the heart.

vitto

What is your name?
My name is Vittorio Merlo.

How do your friends call you?
Vitto.

Describe yourself with three words.
In alphabetical order: Family, Library, Music.

How long have you been living in Luxembourg?
I am here since July 1994: more than 21 years… I am Italian and before to come here I was living for 35 years in Milan.

What are you doing here?
I am working as librarian for the Court of Justice of the European Union

How do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Older… 🙂 I normally don’t like to plan for more than 2 years, the life is taking new directions suddenly and very often things happen without being able to expect them. If nothing special happens I will probably be still working but closer to the retirement, my five children will be growth up, and I will continue composing and singing my songs.

What do you fancy doing in your spare time?
As I have just said since I am 15 years old I compose and sing my songs in Italian. It is like a diary, a way to keep trace of my emotions and feelings. I sing about my family, politics and social problems, I have also written a love song for the Red Car: Ferrari! I have published 3 CDs and I like to present my songs in solo concerts at the piano. You can find my music and videos on my YouTube channel and in all the music platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc.

What is your beloved place in Luxembourg?
Home sweet home, my house in Bissen.

What is your favorite restaurant in Luxembourg?
The Italian restaurant Notaro in Luxembourg and La Rameaudière in Ellange-Gare.

What is your preferred night-life spot in Luxembourg?
In the past it was L’Inoui in Redange/Attert but unfortunately it is actually closed, I hope for a while only. I like places where you can speak with friends drinking a good glass of wine, like Culturando at Limpertsberg or Beim Abruzzebier in Grosbous.

Do you have a favorite drink?
Dry white wine, definitely, during my concerts too.

Where do you do your shopping usually?
For clothing I like Boggi but I use online shops too, like Herrenausstatter. I like cooking too and I find the choice in Auchan very good, additionally for the Italian food Enoteca Italiana in Foetz is helpful too. I like fish and I think is a pity that La Provençale doesn’t serve private families too.

What do you like about Luxembourg life?
Everything but the climate… however exceptionally this year I cannot complain, it was a wonderful summer! The nicest since I am living here.

What would you improve?
I think the public transports are not enough, mainly in the countryside. There are many villages where you cannot live without a car and on Sunday you are almost totally isolated. The management of the traffic is also bad, sometimes I have the feeling Luxembourgers like to create the traffic jams…

What is the best place you visited in a range of 200 km from the city and that you would suggest for a daily trip?
Probably the nicest place around Luxembourg is Trier, however everybody knows it. I would like to suggest a visit in a sunny day to Saarburg, not far from the Luxembourgish border of Wormeldange.

What is the best adjective to describe Luxembourg.
Quiet.

Lanzarote bites

I am just back in Luxembourg after two chaotic weeks of holidays and now, just in front of my office windows, the most chaotic event in Luxembourg ever is taking place – the summer Braderie. I have a wedding and funeral band playing louder than my printer and a pile of posts to open. So, the laziest, I decided what would be better than looking back at my vacation pictures?

We had great time in Lanzarote, the island is amazing – something totally different from what you have seen so far – and you can spend days visiting around. Or you can just lay in the sun, eat and drink. We tried to do both of them, indeed, and I have to admit the quality of the food and drinks was above my expectations.

Enjoy this gallery and have a lovely week.
